    You forgot to mention the big name bowl games they played in..... When it comes down to it, that's what matters on a national scale. Ive been impressed with some of their wins but you can't beat your chest when they end up playing in the foster farm or Vegas bowl.

    ---------------

    Nope, what matters is being a top 25 P5 program. Western Michigan just played and lost in a Tier 1 NY6 bowl. So what? BYU is a better program than WM.

    Who's bragging, we didn't even want to be in the Vegas Bowl playing BYU.

    I'll take wins over ACC Georgia Teach in the Sun Bowl and Big 10 Indiana in Foster Farms in Tier 2 and Tier 3 bowls.

    BYU will never play in a bowl like the Foster Farm Bowl. For BYU it's two possibilities; BCS bowl (basically impossible) or the Vegas, Miami Beach, etc. bowl. This year they do not have a tie in. They will have to take the scraps from what the P5 teams can't fill. I believe it's the Hawaii bowl the following year. Big difference between Utah's bowl, and possible bowl; and BYU's.

    I had to laugh about the comments denigrating BYU/Tom Holmoe for scheduling Liberty U. These detractors obviously have no clue who Liberty U is nor what they have done or that they are a new FBS team this coming FB season.

    To put things into perspective, one comment listed some of the history about Liberty's previous games and future games. It also indicated Liberty's successes and their desire to do whatever is necessary to succeed in sports.

    I would love to hear back from some of the posters after their teams schedule games with Liberty U. It should be an interesting read.

    Remind me what Utah has done since joining a P5 conference?? Yes, scheduling a home and away with Liberty is a joke but I still love the Cougs. The U hasn't been relevant in quite some time either. I'd lay off until they do something in the conference of champions.

    -----

    In SIX years Utah has done the following:

    * Become a top 25 P5 program by beating teams like: #3 USC, #10 UCLA, #11 Michigan

    * #5 overall in PAC-12

    * #7 in PAC-12 play

    * Just landed a top 25 class (per Rivals)

    BYU over the same period:

    * Outscored Utah by 27 points in the last 7 Quarters

    * Only lost at Utah by one point

    Steve Warren,

    The Utes have had the Cougs number that is for sure. Utah rose to #3 during the season which unfortunately doesn't mean anything. What matters is where you finish and from what I can remember the Utes have done to nothing but go to mid-level bowl games just like my Cougs.

    I looked up Liberty University and found that they have a $1.05 Billion dollar endowment. For the record, Utah state's is $325.3 Million and the University of Utah's is $1.077 Billion. I think I would be careful writing them totally off just because they are not a Traditional football university with a history.

    Unless someone can see the future, it is really not accurate to call this a "gimmie" game. How good will Liberty be in '19 and '22? Don't know but it seems that the school is willing to build a D1 competitive team and have spent the time to build their team up to that level. If they continue to put the money, effort and desire into this program? Perhaps they will be a pretty good D1 team by the time of the BYU game. Three seasons from now.
    And, no, Chris. Most fans do not require that their teams be in P5 conferences and on the verge of a National Championship every year to support their team. Based on your standard, the Ivy League, all non-P5 teams, and all D2 and below teams should just quit. Happily, most fans love their teams, love football, and do not need what you state you need in order to support them.

    You can always count on some good laughs after reading dubious comments from fans of a team that get to watch North Dakota and San Jose St. play their Team at home this year .... The following is a list of teams that Liberty has recently played or is scheduled to play in the near future .... Virginia, Auburn, Ole Miss, Baylor, SMU , Virgina Tech., West Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina St., Army ... Looks like the Y is doing exactly what other P5 schools do in scheduling a "Gimme " here and there ..

    It is interesting that the inclusion of Liberty into the schedule has had such a negative response. Sure it would be nice for BYU to play 8-9 P5 schools every year, but that probably won't happen until BYU is invited into a conference, because once conference play begins very few teams have open weeks.
    I also think there are other motivations involved. Perhaps helping another college get going with an independent schedule, the Y knows how hard that can be. Missionary work -- both there and in Provo when we play and they see who we really are. A trip to the east coast for alumni and recruiting.
    Long term these games won't matter much in the overall scheme of things. I know that BYU is in the best place (independence) it can be at the moment. Our overall schedule if we had remained would have even been worse, with the added negative of less TV exposure, especially on the east coast.
    Just win and everything else will work its way out.

    Maybe BYU should give up football. Then they could free up some money and create a world class research facility instead that could prove climate change is fake news, and that Trump and the Russians never colluded, and that business interests take better care of our public lands than the BLM.

    Yeah, that's exactly what they should do.

    This article brings out a few issues. First it started talking about Liberty University, but quickly became a hit piece on President Trump and conservative evangelical christians attending Liberty University. They voted for Donald Trump for the most part. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders divided the Democrats to such a point as to damage both candidates and that included the campaigns and party manipulating results, spying on each other and leaving many Democrat youth in a vile mood that still persists. Divided the party. Republicans are no where so divided or violent against the government. Secondly, 50,000 people celebrated the Graduation event that the President graciously spoke at. Missing was the statement that Sen. Sanders was properly treated at Liberty while at other schools Repub/Conservatives speakers were mocked, attacked or denied free speech rights. Lastly, some are concerned on BYU' s football program. Auburn a perennial power is playing Liberty. It won't hurt their ambitions to be number 1. It will not hurt BYU. Tom Holmoe and for that matter Bronco at Virginia helped Liberty out scheduling because they know how hard it is! BYU 1 Utah 0 National Championships

    And as lousy and BYU is;

    Not in a P5 conference.
    Having to schedule two games with lowly LU
    Totally irrelevant mid major program
    (I could go on quoting Chris B and the other trolls)

    The Utes were only one point better last year, on their home field, playing with 8 future NFL draftees, with a veteran coaching staff; against a school with an all new coaching staff (some with no experience in D1) with an all new offense and an all new defense and only one games experience with the new O&D under their belt.

    Only one point better.

    Go ahead with your mockery, and trash talk. Last year you were only one point better.
    You denigrate BYU, you denigrate yourself.

    I would literally rather my football program disband than schedule a home and home with Liberty.

    for that matter, if my program wasn't playing a P5 schedule, with at least 8 P5 opponents, like 100% of P5 teams do, I'd be fine if the whole program just shut down.

    In college football, the gap is growing between the P5 and the mid majors, and that division will only keep growing.

    If I was a team like liberty, unlv, utah state, wyoming, byu, that never had a chance at ever being relevant and wasn't playing for a P5 title and playoffs, ever, I'd rather focus my interests on something else and be fine to not even play football.

    I literally can't imagine how horrible it would be to be scheduling a home and home with Liberty and turn around and try to convince the world you are a P5 team and deserve such treatment.
